I am positively obsessed with Evernote, obsessed. I store PDFs and lore in there so I can keep track of what I have and want to get, and what I've printed. I'm vaguely considering getting my handwritten notes in there but we'll see, since they're quite excessive. That said, my whole life is in Evernote haha. I have a pretty robust stack and tag system for work, and then I also keep a few notebooks for general "life" stuff. Yes! I wish they had a more robust todo integration but other than that everything is in there.

Even though I was fortunate enough to have a tiny bit of instruction on study skills and note taking, I've always been horrible with it. My biggest thing is I learn best through auditory learning. Whenever I was listening to a lecture I just had to sit there and really listen in to what was being said. If I turned to take a note I would immediately lose concentration and lose everything that was being said, having to take extra effort to figure out what I had missed.
I've played around with the idea of getting a voice recorder and trying to take audio notes that I could listen to later, but haven't really found a way to make it work yet. If anyone has any ideas, I would be most grateful.
Since most of our study takes place in books and article, I should be able to take notes and I'm hoping I can develop a system as I go along. I like writing pads, so I have a couple of those with pre-punched holes. My idea is to take notes until the front side of the sheet is full, then rip it off and go to the next sheet of paper. That way when I put it all in a binder the backs of each sheet will be blank and I can use those to annotate the notes that are on the next sheet (if that makes sense). That's going to be what I'm going to call the "raw notes". From there I'm planning on compiling everything together, categorizing, color coding, etc, all while continuing to leave the back of the sheets for annotations like before. Both the raw notes and the compiled notes will be handwritten as I feel like that really helps to get things to stick in the brain... plus I want to improve my handwriting =)
Also, as stated before, Evernote. I use Evernote for general journaling so I'm sure I'll find a way to utilize it for note taking alongside handwritten notes.

I think your handwritten note plan sounds great! And maybe I'm completely off my rocker but I think Evernote has some sort of audio note taker? I'll have to take a look. I have the paid version so I don't want to go on about something I think it might have that isn't even free, haha.

I think it might have it on the mobile app too, but my phone's dead right now. I have a side tumblr for reblogging info I see there, though it can be awkward when I want to save parts of conversations or trust my lackluster tagging skills. I should try putting things in evernote, but reblogging it for later is so easy...

I should try putting things in evernote, but reblogging it for later is so easy... You could set up a recipe on ifttt.com/ to say that every time something is posted to your side blog, it's automatically sent to Evernote. I've used that in the past and it worked pretty well for me.

Oh my GOD I didn't know IFTTT could integrate with Evernote! I'm going to be getting a little bit nuts later today...

Haven't really noticed audio on there. Going to have to take a look.

I'm a big fan of Evernote which is a site that allows you to collect information and sort it into sections (called "notebooks") and tag entries as well. It has apps and browser plugins so it doesn't matter which device you're on, you can always access whatever you've saved to it. The plugins are great because you just click on the icon and it not only will save the webpage or file to your account, but you can highlight and save just a section if that's all you need, and select which notebook to save it to and add tags. There's a free basic level which is pretty generous in addition to premium levels. You can create text files directly in Evernote in addition to saving links and articles as their own notebook entries.
Google docs is very handy as well, I use it as a pdf library. It also can be accessed from any device and the preferences on each saved doc has the option for making it available on a device when you're offline (good for when you know you're not going to have wifi and want something to read).

You guys are making me want to try Evernote. As for my own methods of collecting research, I'm a big fan of non-electronic resources. I have a commonplace book that I put all my thought processes, rituals, devotions, and notes in. I also annotate all of my polytheism-related books in the margins. Usually, I don't need everything in one place (the thrill of the search is partially why I'm in library school...), and for non-physical things, my side-tumblr is a huge help for collecting discussion threads, videos, and podcast episodes.

ONE OF US, ONE OF US I've finally started keeping a notebook for my own thought processes, instead of just my binder for notes, and I feel like it totally gave my practice a big kick in the ass. I've been able to learn so much more by giving myself a better place to process!

so i finally got evernote and i noticed it had a chat function? i was wondering what other (especially gp) evernote users thought of using this as a way to share ideas/notes/upg that we don't really feel comfortable putting out publically yet? i know we have the celtic chat on skype, but this could be a useful brainstorming tool?

Ooh I didn't even think of that! That'd be really interesting - I'm curious how it works? I initially thought it was only for work teams, but I can't find anything that actually specifies that, so we may as well experiment and see if it works!

I am very technology minded, so I store all of my references in Evernote. It's perfect for me because I can take notes in it, I can save clips from webpages using the browser plug-in, I can forward emails to myself, I can take pictures of books and upload them... basically I can put everything in Evernote and use it as my external brain. I've been using it this way for almost five years and between notebooks, tags, and a fabulous search, I very rarely am unable to find something I put in there. Yes, I definitely second the Evernote option! I have butted against the premium in the first month of using it, though, so maybe a private diary service or even a not-well-advertised tumblr may be appropriate for someone like me.

I can appreciate that. Despite having developed a large e-book/PDF collection, I still opt for a hard copy book whenever possible. Even so, I like the freedom of being able to chip away at some research regardless of where I am whenever I have a free moment (and wifi connection!).

I've also come across a service offered through my university called EndNote Web (http://www.myendnoteweb.com), which is a reference management system (and very easy to confuse with Evernote). It works for me to have an online list of useful sources, and by linking it to my favorite libraries, I can search for new citations to look up. Very basic, and not necessarily note-taking, but I like it.
