I'm second-generation Irish and consider myself part of the Anglo-Irish community, which is fairly strong in London.
I used to go to hear folk music and to ceilidhs a lot. Since I became disabled I've thought that it would make me too sad to just go and watch the dancing, so I haven't been for a while - but I should definitely go and hear more music again. My cousins in Ireland are Irish dancers, and, when I go back in the summers, I often get to see them dance at open dance evenings, which is fab. I also enjoy reading Irish history and the history/current sociology of the Catholic Church there. The language is a bit less of a priority for me than other cultural things, since my family there are not from a Gaeltacht and don't speak it, but I'd like to learn some - though I've always found it very difficult.
Literature is a particular passion of mine, especially Irish poetry. I especially like Medbh McGuckian and Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, and of course the superb Leanne O'Sullivan who has written a spectacular book of poetry about local beliefs about An Chailleach Bhearra.
The specific culture of County Cork and even more specifically the Beara peninsula, where my family is from, is a big fascination of mine. I read anything I can find either about there or from there! Tidbits of folklore and beliefs pop up in guide books, photo books, history books and so on. Fantastic stuff.
