Greetings all, I'm Micheál or Mike, and happen to be another Gaelic Polytheist. Although I'm an initiate of another pagan tradition that receives much mainstream attention that I'd say the public is greatly misinformed about, my personal path outside of that circle is what brings me here. I guess you could say I, like many, first heard the call of the ancestors and Gods as a teenager, and have been following since. (I'm currently 31) Outside of message boards I'm originally from Missouri, but Ireland has been my home for the last 8 years where I moved shortly after a stint in the Marines. I've since got my GCSE and Silver Fáinne in Irish language from Belfast's an Cheathrú Ghaeltachta where I also work as a barman at the weekends. During the week I travel all around in a white van as an engineer installing and servicing perimeter security, and then try balancing that with being a competitive MMA fighter in my spare time(a fulltime job in itself!) For the last couple years I mostly browse the net on a sh*tty tablet that takes me ages to type, but I hope to get one of those chromebooks soon which should hopefully increase my participation....see youse around Beirigí bua

Hey Micheál, welcome to the forum! I'm super excited to hear from you I've started learning Irish via Duolingo a few weeks ago, which has been really interesting because I've been able to start picking apart sentences now that I've got a handle on how they're structured, and it's made all my various reading a lot easier despite really not being able to do anything actually constructive with the language. I'd love to be able to spend some extended time in Ireland to learn properly in the future. I'm hoping to visit in a year or two because my family's from Tyrone, so I'd like to scope out some options while I'm there.

Heya Ashley, Thanks very much, and maith thú!! Yea the trick is remembering verb, then subject, then object lol( or goa/gáire as árd ). Adjectives coming after nouns too, well most the time because like any language there's always crazy grammar exceptions. That's cool though I've heard good things about duolingo, and I applaud anyone willing to learn the language That'd be great for you, Tyrone is lovely, and the language seems to be flowing here in Ulster. There was a writer I like called William Carelton who wrote stories about the Irish peasantry and folk life where he pretty much preserved what he encountered growing up. He was from, and is buried in Tyrone, so I always imagine that's what it must have been like there whenever I drive through. Ha I like your title there. Reminds me of an MMA fighter from Dublin called Aisling Daly. Her nickname is "Ais the Bash" too, and watching her you can see why!!

Fáilte Micheál!
I, like Ashley, have been trying to learn Irish through Duolingo...but I think going to Ireland and going to an Irish-speaking part will do me better than any lessons I find online.
Best of luck with your MMA fighting, too!
And I hope you get a Chromebook! I really want one, but given my desktop is in perfect working condition...it's something that is put on the backburner for way later.

Míle buíochas a Allec, that's great! Yea being in the Gaeltacht does wonders. Tv channels like RTÉ's TG4, abd Raidió na Gaeltachta helped me when I couldn't get out. Think they're streaming, and on podcasts now. And cheers for that. Yea I've fought 4 times in the last year, so am currently on a break til the new year so I can enjoy pizzas abd pints for a while.... Hi Callisto!! Glad to be on board!!

I'm so thrilled by this hahha. seamu5 gave me the nickname because I'm a tiny pit-loving metalhead, but Ais is even smaller than me!! I'm really impressed by Duolingo, I didn't think it was going to be nearly as robust as it is! But I'll have to see if I can find anything from William Carelton, that sounds really lovely.

Welcome to our little corner of the internet Mike!
Hope you manage to get a Chromebook soon. I've had one for a year and a half and they run great as long as all you need is internet, email, youtube, word processing, and the like. Functionality is limited in Chromebooks, but if you're okay with that they're great and there are work-arounds for just about anything you need to do... Unfortunately for me I dropped mine a few weeks ago and broke the monitor so now I'm stationary with it hooked up to a 24" TV through HDMI... sigh.
