Norse Polytheism, or Norse Heathenry as it is more commonly known, is the practice of worshipping the gods and entities of pre-Christian Scandinavia. It is focussed strictly on the Norse pantheon and so it is more restricted in it's scope than the related, but different, Germanic Polytheism.
Most widely known from the Norse myths (and deities such as Odin, Loki, Thor, Frigg, Frey and Freyja), Norse Heathenry has enjoyed a resurgence in modern times and with further research and developments in our understanding of this once lost religion many are returning to the original religion of Northern Europe.
Practices may vary greatly between individuals but will normally manifest along a sliding scale between reconstructionist practice and traditionalist practice. Reconstructionist practice is based on the revival of the Viking Age practices of the pre-Christian Norse peoples, influenced by historical literature and evidence. Traditionalist practice is focussed more on the living religion in the Nordic homelands through tradition, folk belief and surviving cultural practices.
Within the practices of Norse Heathens one will likely find gatherings and celebrations such as blot (sacrifice), moot (meeting) and thing (assembly). Major holidays include Winternights/Vinternettene (the arrival of winter), Yule/Jul (Christmas time) and Segerblot/VĂ„rblot (victory sacrifice in Spring).
This is a very brief introductory overview and hopefully we can go into much greater detail within the forums.
