Similar to Jack's Narnian polytheism thread, I'm wondering if there are any here who honor the Gods and spirits written about by Tolkien? I have been doing this on and off since I read the Silmarillion in junior high (more than 15 years now). It was my introduction to polytheism and has remained very powerful in my life, especially the Goddesses Yavanna and Varda. Any others out there?

I realize this post is very old, but it's such a nice thread I wanted to breathe some life into it!
I've been honoring Valar on and off since I was probably 10 or 11 years old. It started with Varda, but my attention lately is focused more on Aulë and Yavanna and the Valar and Valier as a whole. A friend and I worked out a festival calendar that I enjoy following alongside my more traditional one, sometimes secularly and sometimes with Eru and the Ainur welcomed to the table. Have any thoughts or experiences you would like to share? And since this is old, anyone else doing this that wants to talk about it?

Not a Tolkien polytheist myself but I'm definitely interested in learning about your thing. Can I ask about the calendar you've set up?

Not a Tolkien polytheist myself but I'm definitely interested in learning about your thing. Can I ask about the calendar you've set up? My friend seems to have taken down a lot of the information on it, so to respect their privacy I'll just give a quick summary if that is okay: The elven calendar has 6 seasons, starting in springtime, with intercalary days at the beginning and end of the year as well as a three-day break in between. When you comb through Tolkien's writing and also the Histories of Middle Earth, you can find six holidays mentioned celebrated by the elves or the Valar. Some of them already line up with seasons, some of them have to be guessed about, but the result when you patch it together is that there is a holy day at the start of every season, as well as on every intercalary day. My friend and I also included the summer and winter solstices as times to think about stories regarding the sun and moon and the history of their lights in Tolkien's mythos. I would have to look up my calendar, but the basic way I follow them is that it starts with welcoming in the new year, welcoming springtime, welcoming summer, a harvest festival, three days of gratefulness and praise to Eru, second harvest festival/feast of Eru, a time for family and inward thought, a time of purification, and finally reflecting on the old year before it starts again.

Oh, it's perfectly fine. Religion can be very private yeah. Anyway this is very neat. I was never too knowledgeable about the calendars and such. More language on my end of the Tolkien thing.
