Is anyone else interested in the Tortall pantheon? (And the surrounding lands, lbr.) As I'm evaluating my own spiritual beliefs, I'm considering this path a little more, and wondering if there's someone else out there who is working with any of the Gods.

Tortall is fantasy fiction, it does not relate in any way to historical polytheism.

Which is why this is on the "pop-culture" section.

Fantasy is a gateway to paganism/polytheism for a lot of us I grew up being very into mythology, and reading the Tortall books and some others was one thing that took me from "Man, these ancient religions are so much cooler than what we have now" to "Hmm, maybe I'll just start worshiping gods anyway". In spite of fundie fears, didn't get that from Harry Potter- lots of ethical & philosophical content but not religious per se, though I did appreciate all the classical references in the names. So to answer your question, no I haven't worshipped any of the Tortallan pantheon but I can understand the appeal. One thing I'd suggest looking at similarities in other mythologies- most obvious being Mithros as well as cultures that seem to be influential- the Yamani Islands and Japan for example. Not everyone who counts themselves a polytheist worships "historical" gods. We at the Polytheist Community Forum respect that and provide a safe space for discussion. Everyone else: keep on keepin' on!

OK, being an old girl it just seems odd to me that pop fiction has such an influence on new neopagans. I guess it's a generational thing, but I can't help wondering if it engenders a lasting, realist influence on relgious world-view or it is a fleeting fad.

When you think about it, "pop culture" at the time of the ancient religions was things like Cú Chulainn and other lore. There are many people who are finding meaning in the modern stories of today, which doesn't seem any different to me than finding meaning in The Táin. I doubt it's a fleeting-fad. Maybe for some individuals, but on a whole? Hardly.

This is the pop culture polytheist subforum, and it is meant to be a safe place for pop culture polytheists to talk about their beliefs and practices. Please respect the beliefs of the people posting in this subforum, and don't take the thread off-topic. myriadofcolors : I remember those books being important to me when I was younger! I don't remember them too well, but I definitely remember the powerful impact they can have, and the wonderful feeling when you find a pantheon that matches up with your experiences and beliefs. I hope that looking into the Tortall pantheon goes well for you. My experience is mostly with other series, but if you ever want to chat about it in general I'm happy to do that. Let us know where your practice goes!
